Privacy Policy

OVatlas is a free, live public-transport map for the Netherlands. It requires no account creation, no sign-ins, and no identifying information. This page serves as an explanation of how OVatlas handles your data.

OVatlas is operated by Jamil Karami (jkarami@ovatlas.nl), the Netherlands, who is the data controller for the purposes of this policy.

Data Collection

We never ask you for your name, email address, physical address, or phone number, and we have no way to receive them.

OVatlas can ask your browser for your location, but only if you choose to allow it. On your first visit we show a notice offering to center the map on you; nothing happens unless you press Allow, and you are free to decline or ignore it. Your coordinates are handled entirely by your browser and are never sent to us.

What does reach our server is the area of the map you are viewing afterwards, because the requests for live vehicles include the current map bounds. That is an approximate area rather than your exact position, and like every other request it appears in the server logs described below.

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with data brokers. A small number of third-party services do receive limited technical data as a necessary part of making the site work — these are described under Advertising and Services we use below.

Our server also records basic technical information automatically, as described under Server Logs.

Browser Data

We use your browser's local storage — not cookies; we set no cookies of our own — to remember your preferences. This is everything we store:

None of this is sent to or stored on our servers, and none of it identifies you.

One indirect exception is worth spelling out: when you open your favorites, your browser requests the current departures for each stop you have saved, so those stops are named in the requests your browser makes to us. Like every request, they appear in the server logs described below. The list itself stays in your browser and is never uploaded.

Server Logs

We store technical logs on our servers for the purpose of service and performance monitoring, as well as identifying and fixing technical issues.

The technical information we store includes:

Because the full URL is recorded, these logs also show what a request was about — for example the text you typed into the search box, or which stop you opened. We do not read the logs for that purpose; they exist to keep the service running.

These logs are kept for 30 days and are then deleted automatically. They are never combined with other data or used to build a profile of you. We process this information on the basis of our legitimate interest in keeping OVatlas secure, available, and working correctly.

Analytics

We use Umami, an open-source web analytics platform, which helps us understand how users interact with OVatlas. It collects data on page views, time spent, and other metrics without identifying any individual users. This information is not identifying, and it is not used to personalize your experience.

Umami sets no cookies and does not track you across other websites. Rather than storing your IP address, it derives an anonymous, daily-rotating identifier from it, which cannot be traced back to you.

We host Umami ourselves. None of this information leaves our servers, and it is not in any way shared with any third parties. We process it on the basis of our legitimate interest in understanding how OVatlas is used.

Advertising

OVatlas displays ads supplied by Google AdSense. These ads help us cover server and operation costs.

Ads only appear on screens wide and tall enough to fit one next to the map, and your browser contacts Google's ad services only when that is the case — on a phone, or wherever no ad fits, nothing ad-related is loaded at all.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, a consent dialog — Google's certified consent management platform — is shown before any ad appears. It asks whether Google and its advertising partners may store and read cookies on this site to show you personalized ads. If you consent, ads may be personalized based on your interests. If you do not, Google does not use cookies for ad personalization here, and ads may be non-personalized or may not appear at all. Google stores your answer in a cookie so that you are not asked again on every visit.

You can change or withdraw your choice at any time by reopening the consent dialog.

Google carries out this processing as an independent controller. We do not receive or have access to any of this data, and no identifying information is received by us from Google.

Services we use

Displaying the map requires your browser to request the background tiles directly from Carto (https://carto.com/). Like any web request, those requests carry technical data such as your IP address and browser details, plus the coordinates of the map tiles being drawn, so Carto also receives the approximate area you are viewing.

To keep the service available only within Europe, our server may check which country a visitor's IP address belongs to using the freely available IP to Country Lite database by DB-IP (https://db-ip.com/). This lookup happens entirely on our own server — your IP address is never sent to DB-IP.

This information is essentially presented as-is. Any modifications made are simply to structure the data in a way that is easier to display on the map. This means that we cannot guarantee the complete accuracy of the information displayed.

Your rights and GDPR

Under the GDPR, you have the right to request access to your data, to request that it be corrected or deleted, and to object to our processing of it.

Because OVatlas has no accounts and stores nothing about you on our servers beyond the technical logs described above, in practice this right concerns those server logs. If you wish to exercise it, please contact us at support@ovatlas.nl with your IP address and an approximate timeframe, and we will locate and delete the relevant entries to the best of our ability. Note that our analytics data cannot be retrieved or deleted individually, because it contains nothing that can be linked back to you.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (https://autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl/).

Children

OVatlas is not directed at children under 13, and we knowingly collect no data from them.

Changes

Any changes to this policy will reflect in an update on this page. A timestamp will be displayed at the bottom of the page.

Privacybeleid

OVatlas is een gratis, live openbaarvervoerkaart voor Nederland. Je hoeft geen account aan te maken, niet in te loggen en geen identificerende gegevens op te geven. Op deze pagina leggen we uit hoe OVatlas met jouw gegevens omgaat.

OVatlas wordt beheerd door Jamil Karami (jkarami@ovatlas.nl), Nederland, die de verwerkingsverantwoordelijke is voor de toepassing van dit beleid.

Welke gegevens we verzamelen

We vragen je nooit om je naam, e-mailadres, postadres of telefoonnummer, en we hebben ook geen enkele manier om die te ontvangen.

OVatlas kan je browser om je locatie vragen, maar alleen als je daar zelf toestemming voor geeft. Bij je eerste bezoek tonen we een melding met het aanbod om de kaart op jou te centreren; er gebeurt niets tenzij je op Toestaan klikt, en je bent vrij om te weigeren of de melding te negeren. Je coördinaten worden volledig door je browser verwerkt en worden nooit naar ons verzonden.

Wat wél onze server bereikt, is het kaartgebied dat je daarna bekijkt, omdat de verzoeken om actuele voertuigen de huidige kaartgrenzen bevatten. Dat is een globaal gebied en niet je exacte positie, en net als elk ander verzoek verschijnt het in de serverlogs die hieronder worden beschreven.

We verkopen je gegevens niet en we delen ze niet met datahandelaren. Een klein aantal diensten van derden ontvangt wel beperkte technische gegevens, omdat dat nodig is om de site te laten werken — die worden hieronder beschreven onder Advertenties en Diensten die we gebruiken.

Daarnaast legt onze server automatisch basale technische informatie vast, zoals beschreven onder Serverlogs.

Browsergegevens

We gebruiken de lokale opslag van je browser — geen cookies; zelf plaatsen we geen enkele cookie — om je voorkeuren te bewaren. Dit is alles wat we opslaan:

Niets hiervan wordt naar onze servers verzonden of daar opgeslagen, en niets ervan identificeert je.

Eén indirecte uitzondering verdient het om benoemd te worden: als je je favorieten opent, vraagt je browser voor elke opgeslagen halte de actuele vertrektijden op, waardoor die haltes worden genoemd in de verzoeken die je browser naar ons stuurt. Net als elk ander verzoek verschijnen ze in de serverlogs die hieronder worden beschreven. De lijst zelf blijft in je browser en wordt nooit geüpload.

Serverlogs

We slaan technische logbestanden op onze servers op om de dienst en de prestaties te bewaken en om technische problemen op te sporen en te verhelpen.

De technische informatie die we opslaan omvat onder meer:

Omdat de volledige URL wordt vastgelegd, laten deze logs ook zien waar een verzoek over ging — bijvoorbeeld de tekst die je in het zoekveld hebt getypt, of welke halte je hebt geopend. We lezen de logs daar niet voor; ze bestaan om de dienst draaiende te houden.

Deze logbestanden worden 30 dagen bewaard en daarna automatisch verwijderd. Ze worden nooit gecombineerd met andere gegevens of gebruikt om een profiel van je op te bouwen. We verwerken deze informatie op grond van ons gerechtvaardigd belang om OVatlas veilig en beschikbaar te houden en goed te laten functioneren.

Statistieken

We gebruiken Umami, een opensourceplatform voor webstatistieken, dat ons helpt te begrijpen hoe bezoekers OVatlas gebruiken. Het verzamelt gegevens over paginaweergaven, bestede tijd en andere statistieken, zonder individuele gebruikers te identificeren. Deze informatie is niet identificerend en wordt niet gebruikt om je ervaring te personaliseren.

Umami plaatst geen cookies en volgt je niet over websites heen. In plaats van je IP-adres op te slaan, leidt Umami daaruit een anonieme identificatiecode af die dagelijks wisselt en die niet naar jou te herleiden is.

We hosten Umami zelf. Deze informatie verlaat onze servers niet en wordt op geen enkele manier met derden gedeeld. We verwerken deze gegevens op grond van ons gerechtvaardigd belang om te begrijpen hoe OVatlas wordt gebruikt.

Advertenties

OVatlas toont advertenties die worden geleverd door Google AdSense. Deze advertenties helpen ons de kosten van de servers en de exploitatie te dekken.

Advertenties verschijnen alleen op schermen die breed en hoog genoeg zijn om er een naast de kaart te tonen, en alleen in dat geval maakt je browser verbinding met de advertentiediensten van Google — op een telefoon, of waar geen advertentie past, wordt er helemaal niets advertentiegerelateerds geladen.

Als je je in de Europese Economische Ruimte, het Verenigd Koninkrijk of Zwitserland bevindt, wordt er een toestemmingsdialoog getoond — het gecertificeerde toestemmingsplatform van Google — voordat er een advertentie verschijnt. Daarin wordt gevraagd of Google en zijn advertentiepartners cookies op deze site mogen plaatsen en uitlezen om je gepersonaliseerde advertenties te tonen. Geef je toestemming, dan kunnen advertenties worden afgestemd op je interesses. Doe je dat niet, dan gebruikt Google hier geen cookies voor advertentiepersonalisatie en zijn advertenties niet gepersonaliseerd, of verschijnen ze helemaal niet. Google bewaart je antwoord in een cookie, zodat je niet bij elk bezoek opnieuw wordt gevraagd.

Je kunt je keuze op elk moment wijzigen of intrekken door de toestemmingsdialoog opnieuw te openen.

Google voert deze verwerking uit als zelfstandig verwerkingsverantwoordelijke. Wij ontvangen deze gegevens niet en hebben er geen toegang toe, en we ontvangen van Google geen identificerende informatie.

Een paar dingen die goed zijn om te weten:

Diensten die we gebruiken

Om de kaart te kunnen tonen moet je browser de achtergrondtegels rechtstreeks opvragen bij Carto (https://carto.com/). Zoals elk webverzoek bevatten die verzoeken technische gegevens, zoals je IP-adres en browsergegevens, plus de coördinaten van de getekende kaarttegels, waardoor Carto ook het globale gebied ontvangt dat je bekijkt.

Om de dienst alleen binnen Europa aan te bieden, kan onze server controleren bij welk land het IP-adres van een bezoeker hoort, met behulp van de vrij beschikbare IP to Country Lite-database van DB-IP (https://db-ip.com/). Deze controle gebeurt volledig op onze eigen server — je IP-adres wordt nooit naar DB-IP verstuurd.

De informatie die op OVatlas wordt getoond, is afkomstig van:

Deze informatie wordt in essentie ongewijzigd weergegeven. De aanpassingen die we maken, dienen er alleen toe de gegevens zo te structureren dat ze makkelijker op de kaart te tonen zijn. Dat betekent dat we de volledige juistheid van de getoonde informatie niet kunnen garanderen.

Jouw rechten en de AVG

Op grond van de AVG heb je het recht om inzage in je gegevens te vragen, om correctie of verwijdering ervan te verzoeken, en om bezwaar te maken tegen onze verwerking ervan.

Omdat OVatlas geen accounts kent en op onze servers niets over je opslaat behalve de hierboven beschreven technische logbestanden, gaat dit recht in de praktijk over die serverlogs. Wil je er gebruik van maken, neem dan contact met ons op via support@ovatlas.nl met je IP-adres en een globale tijdsaanduiding, dan zoeken we de betreffende regels op en verwijderen we ze naar ons beste vermogen. Let op: onze statistiekgegevens kunnen niet afzonderlijk worden opgevraagd of verwijderd, omdat ze niets bevatten dat naar jou te herleiden is.

Je hebt ook het recht om een klacht in te dienen bij de Nederlandse privacytoezichthouder, de Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (https://autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl/).

Kinderen

OVatlas is niet gericht op kinderen onder de 13 jaar, en we verzamelen niet bewust gegevens van hen.

Wijzigingen

Eventuele wijzigingen in dit beleid worden verwerkt in een update op deze pagina. Onderaan de pagina staat een tijdstempel.
