Open the live map of LeeuwardenLeeuwarden is the pivot of public transport in Friesland. The bus station next to the railway station is where nearly every regional route in the province begins: towards Dokkum and Damwâld in the north-east, Harlingen and Franeker in the west, Drachten and Heerenveen in the south. Qbuzz runs those routes as well as the city network, and publishes live positions, so OVatlas shows where a bus has actually got to.
Four rail directions converge here, shared between two operators. Arriva runs the local trains to Groningen, Harlingen Haven, Stavoren and Sneek, while NS handles the intercities towards Zwolle, Amersfoort and Utrecht, calling at Heerenveen on the way. Those regional lines call at villages with almost no other transport, and that is exactly where it pays to check on the map first whether the train is running as planned.
Two of those lines end at the water. The train to Harlingen Haven stops at the ferry port from which boats leave for Vlieland and Terschelling, and the line to Stavoren crosses the lake district all the way to the IJsselmeer. The island ferries are listed with their sailing times but are not tracked as moving markers; the train itself you can watch right up to the quayside.
You can. The local train from Leeuwarden to Harlingen Haven runs right up to the ferry port, where boats leave for Vlieland and Terschelling. OVatlas tracks that train live; sailing times for the island ferries are listed on the map, though the boats are not tracked as moving markers.
Qbuzz runs the city and regional buses in Friesland, Arriva the regional trains to Groningen, Harlingen, Stavoren and Sneek, and NS the intercities to Zwolle and Utrecht. All three supply live positions to the national data feeds.
By the regional train via Buitenpost, which runs straight through to Groningen. There is no equally fast bus alternative by road. Open the station on the map to see when the next train leaves and whether it is on time.
There is bus service at the Frisian head of the Afsluitdijk near Zurich, with connections towards Harlingen and Leeuwarden. How often it runs varies with the time of day; the map shows per stop what is genuinely due next.
