Amsterdam runs the busiest urban network in the country: GVB operates the trams, five metro lines and the city bus network, and keeps the free IJ ferries sailing on top of that. Connexxion, EBS and MeerPlus feed regional services into the city from Amstelland, the Haarlemmermeer polder and the Zaan region. On OVatlas those regional buses and every train move across the map as live markers; GVB publishes no positions of its own, but current departure times and delays show up at each of its tram, metro and bus stops.

The four big interchanges sit far apart from one another. Centraal Station gathers tram, metro, bus, ferry and rail under one roof; Station Zuid is the gateway to the Zuidas business district and to the airport train; Sloterdijk ties the west of the city to Haarlem and the Zaan region; Bijlmer ArenA absorbs the traffic arriving from the south-east and from Flevoland. Ferries count as public transport here: line F3 to Buiksloterweg and F2 to IJplein leave from immediately behind Centraal Station and cost nothing at all. At night GVB's night bus network takes over from the trams and the metro, and the map carries their departure times stop by stop. If you leave the car outside the ring road, the park-and-ride sites at Sloterdijk, Zeeburg, ArenA and Olympisch Stadion feed straight into a metro or a tram, and OVatlas shows when the next one is due.

Does public transport run overnight in Amsterdam?

It does. Once the trams and metro shut down, GVB's night bus network links the centre with the outer districts. Open a stop on OVatlas to see when the next night bus is due. NS also runs night trains on the Amsterdam – Schiphol – Leiden – The Hague – Rotterdam loop.

What is the best way from Amsterdam Centraal to Schiphol?

Are the IJ ferries free to use?

Yes. The GVB ferries behind Centraal Station are open to everyone and there is nothing to check in or out with. They appear on OVatlas as ordinary lines, so you can look up sailing times at the landing stage just as you would at a tram stop.
